It's difficult to believe, but even the totalitarian East German state tolerated this particular political cabaret. Founded in 1953, the Distel was threatened only twice by political censors during its turbulent history. It survived, by and large, due to its immense popularity and hilarious performances. The audience's sense of humour was severely tested, when, in the late-1990s, it became clear that theatre-manager Gisela Oechelhäuser had collaborated with the secret police for many years.
