Held in honour of Lord Subramaniam, Thaipusam is a Hindu festival of purification and atonement during which devotees fulfill their vows made to the deity for prayers answered. Devotees can be seen carrying shrines decorated with peacock feathers and offerings such as milk, fruits and flowers in a procession that starts from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple and ends three kilometers away at Sri Thandayuthapani Temple. Some devotees who have prayed and fasted into a trance-like state also carry kavadis with spikes piercing their bodies and skewers driven through their tongues and cheeks.
