"This 15-day festival is the most important event in the Chinese calendar. The main event is the gathering of family members for a reunion dinner on the eve of the New Year. Then, the first two days are a time to exchange well wishes and mandarin oranges (symbolising good fortune) with friends and relatives. Children and unmarried adults are given red packets (hongbaos) containing money. Each evening, Chinatown comes alive with the annual Lunar New Year Light-Up, comprising decorations, fairy lights and a bazaar selling traditional goodies. A street parade, Chingay, is held during this festive season.
