Just around the corner from the Jade Market, on Canton Road between Kansu Street and Pak Hoi Street, are a group of gem shops that are well worth a visit. Unlike other jewelry shops in Hong Kong, these little treasure chests sell loose gems, either as individual pieces or on bracelet- and necklace-length strings. Wholesale and retail trade is welcome and prices are reasonable, although bargaining is always expected. The selection of gems is quite extensive and includes pearls, coral, amethyst, onyx, lapis lazuli, clear and colored quartzes, moonstones, hematite and tourmalines, to name but a few.
