ostia antica is a very intresting day out and a tradtional old town the ruins were preserved very well much better than i thought they would be the mosaics were brilliant you could easy spend a day hear.good idea to bring a picnic. a nice cafe and gift shop located in the ruins. if you have a child in buggie like we did the paths in the ruins are quite hard to get around but parts are not to bad.when visting the ruins make sure to spend some time in ostia anticas town, by castello di Giulio is a little courtyard and a lovely tradtional little church which you would not see from the street.

Now these are Roman remains!
Ostia is a definitly not to be missed if you are into Roman remains or a romantic. Allow a days outing, you'll need it to see half the town properly! Wear good shoes. Take a picnic. Catch the train to Ostia Antica from Pyramide metro station, only one Euro! At Ostia leave the station, cross the bridge over the road and keep walking straight on and you are there in ten minutes at most (it'll take longer to get back!). There is a museum, cafe and toilets halfway down the site. It opens at 8.30 and is closed on Mondays. Entrance is free to EU citizens under 18 or over 65 (proof of age required).

Going back again!
The only thing that I dislike about the trip to Ostia, that my wife and I have taken for the past 11 years, is that when we take the train to Ostia, we never seem to get a taxi back to the train station from Ostia. It is really a nice walk and there is a good restaurant run by good people about half the way back. This is not a problem if you like to walk.
