Dirty, Dilapidated, Decrepit Dump!!!
I purchased a RCI voucher at a charity auction and ended up at the Mayan Palace. This was our sixth trip to Mexico in 4 years and we have also traveled extensively all over the world. This hotel is by far the worst I have I ever stayed in. The Mayan Palace is due for demolition in less than 2 years so you can imagine its current condition. Our first room 741, had a lovely view of the construction site of the new Mayan Palace. The sofas were stained, the thermostat was filthy and broken, the bed mattress super uncomfortable, the furniture was scratched up, the microwave was cracked, there were scores of little bugs all over, etc. You get the picture. I reached out to the front desk for help but was dismissed rightaway. My wife and I went down to the lobby and asked for the manager. After a lot of excuses, the duty manager offered to move us to another room, 553. A little cleaner and a partial pool view. The limited dining choices here are super overpriced and the majority of the wait staff is clueless. We did have a good dinner on the night of the shrimp buffet. The drinks are very weak and about $10 for a scotch and water! The pools are very nice as is the beautiful beach. The staff is very unfriendly, struggle with basic english and avoid helping you as much as they can. We spent a lot of time away from the hotel and in town. The front desk staff is particularly rude and the timeshare folks are everywhere. The Grand Mayan resort which is part of the complex looked a million times better in terms of decor, cleanliness and luxury. I offered to pay the difference and asked to be moved to the Grand Mayan but was told another story and declined. If you love to vacation in squalor, far from the sights, pay through the nose and enjoy insect bites, this is definetly the hotel for you!!! Otherwise, keep looking!!!
