This city is steeped in history and full of interesting monuments. You'll find it located some 89km southwest of Salamanca. The cathedral marks the transition of architectural styles between the Romanesque and the Gothic. Enrique II's castle is now a National Parador. The "Tres Columnas" or three columns at the entrance to the city and the ancient walls and moats surrounding the old town still survive and offer fantastic views of the mountains and plains. In addition to all this, Ciudad Rodrigo is also famous for its Carnival and great food. Be sure to try the typical fried egg dish, huevos fritos con farinato!
It's easy to get to the Sierra de Gata mountains from here (one of the most outstanding natural areas in the province, with its oak and pine forests). It's also feasible to get to the famously wild part of Extremadura called Las Hurdes.
