One of the most imposing buildings in the city, the cathedral is among the first built in the Americas (preceded only by the cathedrals of Mexico and Lima). It was built upon the palace of Inca Viracocha and the temple of Suntur Wasi (House of God). Due to its prolonged construction delays, from 1538 to 1664, the facade has a renaissance style, while the interior finish is baroque. Wonders inside include the elaborately carved wooden altars made of cedar and alder and covered with gold leaf. Also view engraved silverwork and an exquisite collection of paintings from the Escuela Cusqueño (Cusco School). Other masters are also represented. The collection includes Van Dyck's "Christ in the Cross."
