This large river begins its journey in the snowfields of the Southern Alps. It is regarded as the world's best example of a braided river system, where the water takes many paths along the shingle bed. The Maori name means "to arrange in ranks", referring to the need for strong men to stand in ranks to break the current's force while weaker people forded the river. The river is a world-class salmon fishery, and a salmon breeding and research station can be visited at Glenariffe, beyond the twin bridges at spectacular Rakaia Gorge, where there are picnic and camping facilities.
