St Helena was Canterbury's first commercial winery and restaurant, and their early 1990s gold medal Pinot Noir wines put Canterbury firmly on the New Zealand wine map. Owned by former potato farmers, the vineyard is located just to the north of Christchurch, on an island in the sprawling Waimakariri River. Chardonnay, Riesling, Muller-Thurgau and the celebrated Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are all produced here.
