Now located near Langkawi International Airport and the Atma Alam Batik Village, this was once the site of Kampung Raja, the ancient capital of Langkawi and was the home of Datuk Kerma Jaya, the headman who sentenced the legendary Mahsuri to death. Padang Matsirat or Field of Burnt Rice was also the village granary. Just when Langkawi fell into the hands of the Siamese in 1821, Datuk Karma Jaya ordered the burning of the granary to starve the enemy. The burnt rice is said to been buried below the ground and after a downpour, it is still visible.
