As the central axis of the Porteña (which means "from Buenos Aires—a port city") variety shows, the Maipo Theatre has lifted the curtains on the giants of this genre. Three Argentine divas, Nélida Lobato, Susana Giménez and Moria Casán began their prolific careers here as vedettes (showgirls). Some memorable performances include that of Fidel Pinto and the premiere of the tango "Mi noche triste (My Sad Night), with none other than Carlos Gardel, in 1917. It now stages children's shows, comedies and comedias picarescas (tinged with risqué humour). Seating capacity is for 700. Ticket prices vary according to the performance.
