Constructed in the 1920s, the Old Congress Building was originally intended to house the national library but ended up being the seat of the legislative branch of government. The building suffered severe damage during World War II, and some critics say the postwar structure is a product of hasty reconstruction. Nonetheless, it continues to command admiration for its grace and elegance. The National Museum (Old Congress Building) is housed in the building.
