This narrow dry valley is the wine-growing capital of Canterbury, where the highway heads eastwards towards the ocean and westwards into the mountains. With around 15 vineyards, including notables such as Pegasus Bay and Waipara Springs, the region is the highlight of the wine trail, as well as being enjoyed simply for its exquisite natural beauty. Other attractions include the Weka Pass Railway, where you can ride steam and diesel-electric driven locomotives, and the Waipara Wine & Food Celebration - the highlight of the winemaking calendar.
