One of the most important events in Bonn is the Carnival which begins at 11:11a on the 11th of November and continues until Ash Wednesday. The highlights and carnival festivals take place from the beginning of January. In March, on the day before Shrove Tuesday, carnival processions can be found everywhere. The absolute highlight of this period is the bustle at the key ceremony, when the mayor stands on the Market Square and gives the key to the 'couple of the city'. There is no stopping here though, and celebrations continue right up until Ash Wednesday.
