Great tour
For 10 bucks, this is the best tour in SF (and maybe the world!), especially if you are a mystery fan in general and a Dashiell Hammett fan in particular. It is the brainchild of Don Herron, who may be the most knowledgeable Hammet scholar on the planet and who has written a tour book guide and has also published many articles and book reviews. The tour is sceduled for 4 hours, but actually lasted for about 5 plus an extra hour afterwards of informal disussions at a local sports bar. An extra special treat was a visit to the actual apartment inhabited by Hammett, where he lived from 1927-29 when he wrote 3 of his novels, incl The Maltese Falson. It's now inhabited by a friend & associate of Herron's who offers commentary about the abode, which was used as the basis for the fictional scenes in Falcon. Don takes you by all the main sites of the Falcon & other works plusit's a real kick. sites relating to Hammett's actual life. Along the way, he also offers commentary on other local authors and historical tidbits about SF.. He's been doing this for over 30 years and has cut it down to only 8 Sundays a year in May & Sept.
