In early times, ordinary citizens were strictly forbidden from entering the King's residence. As a result, the Royal Palaces were constantly guarded by special military units known as Kumgun (palace guards). You can observe a re—enactment of the guard-changing ceremony with the participants in full traditional uniform. Originally, the ceremony consisted of three parts: the Royal Palaces Guards Ceremony, the opening and closing of the palatial gates, and the Patrol. This re-enactment is an abbreviated version of the original, combining all three parts into one solemn ceremony. Admission is free. This is also observed at the Gyeongbokgung Palace.
