The Villa Hammerschmidt is well-recognised from pictures. The wonderful building was built under the direction of the architect August Diekhoff in 1860 and there is a splendid view of the Rhine and the Siebengebirge from here. Leopold Koenig was the first to live here from 1868, until Rudolf Hammerschmidt, after whom the villa was later named, moved here in 1901. The Federal Republic of Germany finally acquired the property in 1950 and made it the headquarters of the Federal President. The first President to move in was Theodor Heuss in 1951.
