Beuel is particularly well-known for its Women's Carnival Night, a tradition which began in 1824. The carnival became a male dominated event, until some laundry women from Beuel formed a women's committee and chose a 'Washer Princess' amongst themselves, who would have a similar role as the Carnival Prince. These women began the tradition of a Women's Carnival Night (which is held on the last Thursday before fasting begins) and celebrated this day extensively. Located in the Rheinauen, Wäscherinnendenkmal is a memorial dedicated to washer women.
