This square, formerly known as Melchai-Israel Square, was renamed after Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated here on 4 November, 1995, during a peace rally. The square is a popular Tel Aviv landmark, flanked by the City Hall building and many outdoor cafes on the Ibn Gvirol side of the square, which remain lively until late at night. This spot is often used for demonstrations and lobbies as well as public events, such as the annual Yom Haatzmaut festival. There is a memorial for Holocaust victims as well as a memorial area for Yitzhak Rabin.
