Located in a former apothecary shop in what was once a 1920s luxury hotel, the Harlequin Café is often considered Detroit's best French restaurant. The glass cabinets of the pharmacy are intact, displaying works of arts. The chef is a sauce master, using truffles, champagne, morels and other fine items to accompany rich dishes of lamb, duck, crab and other delicacies. The old-style haute cuisine makes no concessions to low-fat diets, and the café operates without menus or wine lists. Classical pianists play in the café; then diners can cross the hall to a room where they can have dessert and choose from more than 100 champagnes while listening to top jazz artists.
