Together with its twin, the Französischen Dom (French Cathedral), the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral) provides a stunning backdrop to Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin's prettiest square. The original structure was completed in 1708, but it was not until 1785 that the impressive dome by Karl Gontard was added. The cathedral was totally renovated in 1996 and now houses an extensive exhibition entitled 'Questions on German History'. The display, which covers three floors, deals with the glories and the tragedies which have defined German history since the French Revolution.
