Stadsteatern originally opened its doors at Lorensbergsteatern in 1918. In 1934, it moved to a new building on Gotaplatsen, and it is said that the features of this new theatre marked a breakthrough in theatrical innovation in Sweden. The 1930s architecture is evident in the characteristic stairwell, and there is a large rotating stage, which can be lowered in different sections. Workshops and studios were also constructed. In the beginning of the 1970s, the municipality of Gothenburg assumed ownership of Stadsteatern, and since then the theatre has played classical as well as modern Swedish and international drama.
