This beautiful building was erected in 1859. It is reminiscent of a small palace and there is a feeling of glamour and golden days gone by in the crystal—adorned foyer as well as in the elegant auditorium, which has several balconies and boxes and a very decorative ceiling. The stage of Stora Teatern has seen all genres: cabaret, comedy, drama, opera, operetta — even Chinese puppet theatre. Between 1920 and 1994, when Göteborgsoperan was opened, it was the home of Göteborgs Musikteater (the Gothenburg Musical Theatre). There are 400 seats in the auditorium, inspired by the French Renaissance. The theatre is also used during the city's annual film festival. Because of the fire hazard, a non—smoking policy is enforced in the foyer. Stora Teatern is situated on Avenyn, in Kungsparken.
