Once a quiet fishing village, this beach town has exploded into a major tourist attraction with a population of over 30,000. Restaurants, hotels and shops spring up overnight. So far development has left the beaches in good shape, if somewhat crowded. This is not the place to relax but you can enjoy great nightlife, dining, shopping and golf or use it as the jumping off point for visiting the Riviera Maya. Ferries depart every half hour from the main dock in San Miguel. The trip takes 45-minute and call ahead to confirm departure.
