On 22 June 1527, Prince Fatahillah of the Demak Kingdom renamed Sunda Kelapa to Jayakarta after successfully defending the city from Portuguese takeover. Modern Jakarta commemorates this day as the anniversary of its founding. Every year, the city transforms itself into a flood of glittering lights and lovely decorations, with ondel-ondel, Jakarta's traditional giant puppet, ubiquitously displayed. Shopping centers extend enormous discounts, and special events, such as Abang-None Jakarta (Mr. and Miss Jakarta contest), are held as part of the joyous celebration.
