This stadium first opened its doors in 1932, comprising three grandstands in the old grounds of what used to be the "Ferrocarril Pacífico" (Pacífico Railway). The boxing ring was opened to the public with a carnival type celebration, on March 5th the same year. Until 1954, Luna Park grew in importance, steadily becoming the sporting events venue of choice. Boxing was the star until 1987, with 22 world championships fought here. It has also been the favourite stage for famous artists and politicians, although its most illustrious visitor has got to be the Pope, John Paul II. Nowadays, the stadium stages popular music shows, as well as other cultural events.
