The Chongmyo Rites originated in the Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910) to pay homage to the gods of grain and the earth. They are symbolic of the Korean tradition of praying to gods and ancestors for the well-being of family and state. Ritual ceremonies are followed by ritualistic arts performances. A regal procession on royal carriages marches two kilometers from the Ch'angdok-gung Palace to the Chongmyo Shrine. This is an experience seeped in the tradition and history of Korea and should not be missed.
