The orchid is the national flower of Costa Rica and no wonder why: the country has more than 1,200 identified species, the richest orchid flora in Central America and one of the most numerous in the world. Featuring many of these species, the weekend-long festival takes place every year in a different venue and date. Growers from all over the world come here to show their wares, trade secrets and admire the hundreds of species on display. Some Travel Agencies such as U.S. based Costa Rica Connections (tel. 800 345 7422, fax 805 543 3626) offer a week-long "Costa Rica National Orchid Show and Tour" with visits to the show and to private orchid collections, Poás Volcano National Park, Lankaster Gardens, and other places of interest to orchid lovers. For details and venues for the next exhibition, phone the Costa Rican Tourist Board on +506 223 1733.
