Every September 16, Mexicans celebrate their independence with a ceremony called "El Grito." Thousands of people gather in the Zocalo, one of the largest public squares in the world and the heart of the city, to show their patriotism. The President shouts the names of the heroes of the independence followed by the crowd. The streets and corners of the Zocalo are filled with street vendors selling flags and hats with the national colors. The National Palace is decorated with thousands of lighted figures. This event is an excellent opportunity to listen to Mariachi music and to try Mexican food. No admission fee.
