This two-day stretch celebrates the saints and the dead, sometimes interchangeably. On self-explanatory All Saints Day, known saints with days of their own during the year are remembered anew along with all unknown saints. In largely Catholic Costa Rica, the holiday is a big deal. On All Souls (compare to Day of the Dead in Mexico), people pay homage to deceased loved ones. In San José, activity centers in the Cemeterio Central where mourners hold vigils and elaborately decorate gravesites. Visitors are welcome but should maintain respectful attitudes and distance.
