Named after Bombay's first Municipal Commissioner Arthur Crawford, the elegant and covered Crawford Market faces the crowded inner city, dominating the skyline with its clock tower and steeple. A mix of Flemish and Norman architecture, Crawford Market was designed by Lockyard Kipling (father of Rudyard Kipling), whose cottage still stands at the J. J. School of Arts across the road. The spaces inside are divided into sections for fruits, vegetables and meat—a middle-class household's answer for inexpensive products. Over the years, Crawford Market has extended into the neighboring streets and also earned itself a new name—Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Market. Stepping into the over congested alleys is sheer madness, photo opportunities are plenty, and needless to say, beware of the lurking touts.
