Won't Be Going Back
The Maya is very pretty to look at. But the Front Desk is not helpful, except for the Manager and one other genteman. The rest were hostile. Some of the pool side staff was the same - very helpful or extremely hostile. Tipping seems to sweeten everyone's attitude. I liked the steak and Japanese. The seafood was fair. And the Italian was horrible. The Lindo is really where the shows are and is much nicer looking. The balconies were not as nice. The concierge was also fair and slow. Room service was slow - up to 1 hour. The tour people were hostile as well, but are not part of hotel staff. Once they got our money they were extremely unhelpful. The Paraiso shopping was very expensive and the hotel gauges you on the exchange rate. In Playa we got up to 14 pesos per dollar. Hotel was 12. We found that going into Playa Del Carmen was much cheaper. If you take tours don't go to the new theme park Xplore. It has 4 things to do. Best to go to the others which are more developed. Also took my daughter to swim with dolphins. I had hoped to watch and take pictures, but they make it difficult as they take the photos and sell them to you for $20 per. They will bargain slightly. I got 3 for $45. They make you watch from outside the pools where the view is behind the action. I do recommend horseback riding. There is currently only a small ranch about an hour. The owner's name is Miguel and is very nice. The trail is a bt slow and rocky, but the horses are well mannered and the owner is very accomodating. Last time we went to Mexico we were in Cancun and I think it was more friendly and easier to get around.

Security poor and front desk not helpful
While the resort was beautiful and most of the staff wonderful, I would not say the hotel was very secure. The safe on my room was broken into while I was at dinner with family. When I went to the front desk for help they not only did nothing to to help me but accused the incident of being completely my fault. They were also hostile when I asked to get the local police involved. The front desk was also unhelpful when my parents asked to get a room with a king bed on the same price level. I would only recommend this hotel if you do not plan on bringing anything of value with you since there are many of similar or better resorts on riviera maya.
