Once a Malay floating fish village, Tanjong Pagar is now a district with rich historical architecture, fusing modern skyscrapers with beautifully restored shophouses built between 1870 and 1940. The earlier houses are of Chinese design with low, squat proportions and minimal ornamentation, while later ones combined colonial and ethnic elements such as Chinese panel frescoes and Malay timber fretwork. A significant portion of Tanjong Pagar has escaped the demolition ball, including the Jinrickisha Station and more than 200 shophouses. After dusk, the area is mostly deserted, apart from nightclubs, bars and eateries operating late into the night.
