The Basilica of Zapopan is one of the oldest in Jalisco and is considered an architectural gem. Franciscan friars built the Doric colonial era basilica in 1690. It has Gothic vaulted ceilings, a Corinthian altar and an ornate Plateresque-style facade typical of the Spaniards. Honouring the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, known today as the Virgen de Zapopan, every October 12th the Romería de la Virgen de Zapopan religious festival unfolds here. On a curious note, during the Mexican Revolution the rank of General was bestowed upon three Jalisciense Virgins; being one allows her to preside over military as well as religious ceremonies.
