Built in 1561 in the center of the city, the Cathedral was not consacrated until 1616. Since then it has undergone several changes so that it now reflects Gothic, baroque, moorish and neoclassical architectural styles. The 65m-high yellow turrets resemble inverted Calla Lillies and are a widely recognised symbol of the city. The original towers were destroyed in the 1818 earthquake and were rebuilt, along with the principal dome, during the 19th century. The cathedral has three naves and houses one of the oldest organs in the city.
