The Palacio de Justicia was one of the buildings that suffered the most due to the troubles in Colombia during the 20th century. It was built for the first time in 1921, but was later destroyed during the 'Bogotazo', a word synonymous with the violent period after the murder of the political leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. A modern palace was erected on the north side of Plaza de Bolívar, which suffered a fate similar to its predecessor. On the 5th of November 1985, the building was taken over by guerrillas from the M-19 GROUP. During a fierce confrontation with the army, a fire was started which destroyed the entire building. In 1989 work was started on the current Palacio de Justicia, which includes the basement of the previous construction. The new neo-classical building has offices, meeting rooms, small squares and terraces spread across 53,000 square metres.
