A three-day battle, from December 31, 1862 through January 2, 1863, resulted in 81,000 killed and 23,000 wounded. In the end, the Confederate Army withdrew and the advancing Union Army gained control of Middle Tennessee and its rails, farms and roads. Located nearby the Stones River National Cemetery. Established in 1865, it is the final resting place of over 6,000 Union soldiers. Admission is free.
