Kaivopuisto (Kaivo Puisto Park) received its name from a spa that used to be located by the shore. The park is one of the most popular relaxation spots in Helsinki, frequently crowded on sunny days with people lounging on the expansive lawns. Restaurant Kaivohuone is in the park, as is the city's small public observatory. The Kaivopuisto People's Festival is held every year in July-August. A large stage is built next to Kaivohuone, and the lawn and rock of T'itorninm' ("Observatory Hill") function as seats for the audience. The park has seen performances from such varied artists as Kent, J. Karjalainen, the Beach Boys and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra; something different can be expected every year. The size of the crowd changes as well, depending on the weather and the performing artists. At their worst, the crowds have been thicker than on May Day in the city centre. Generally, August favors this annual free concert with good weather.
