The Newcastle branch of the worldwide association for travellers is typical in its friendliness and informality. The hostel, in a large converted town house, stands in the same residential suburb as a number of hotels, but is, of course, a good deal less expensive than any of them. The hostel is close to a bus depot, and a Metro station, and is only a few minutes walk away from the main campus of the University of Northumbria, as well as the city center. Accommodation is dormitory style, with communal rooms holding up to eight people. Private rooms can be arranged if you specify this when you book. Bookings should be made at least 48 hours before arrival, so turning up on the doorstep and expecting a room is not a good idea.
