The first Helsinki Day was celebrated on June 12th, 1959, to celebrate the 409th anniversary of the founding of the city. The festivities begins with the drinking of coffee by the mayor of Helsinki in the courtyard of the Town Hall, after which the other events take place. Esplanadi hosts market stalls, and live performances take place on the Espa stage throughout the day. There are guided tours of the city's history and city museums open their doors to the public for free. Theatrical performances also celebrate the day, as do concerts in Kaivopuisto and other locations. One place definitely worth visiting is Suomenlinna, where celebratory events take place in the wonderful setting of the former fortress. The day is especially welcoming for families with children, as admission to Linnanmäki amusement park is free.
