The Waterloo Column commemorates the victorious battle near the Belgian village of Waterloo on June 18 1815, when Prussians, Britons and Hanoverians together in unusual unison defeated the French Emperor Napoleon. On top of the column thrones Victoria, the goddess of victory, who for more than fifty years declined any audience at her dizzy height. Today, however, you can climb up the slender column built also by the famous architect Laves.
