Berlin's most colourful and vivacious street festival, the Carnival of Cultures, was inaugurated in 1996 and has taken place every Whitsun weekend since. Organised by the Werkstatt der Kulturen, the aim of the carnival is to bring together Berlin's numerous different cultures in a joyous celebration of the city's multi-ethnicity. Over half a million people come to watch 4,000 colourfully costumed participants from 70 countries dance along the streets of Kreuzberg. In addition to the street procession, there are also a number of stages. The main stage is located on Blücherplatz, the children's stage on Mariannenplatz.
