This landmark is one of the great symbols of the city, and of the region as a whole. Like many great bridges, the Tyne Bridge is talismanic - welcoming those who belong or visit, and wishing safe return to those who depart. The emotional ties invested in this steel monument should not be underestimated. It is a genuinely dramatic sight, and seen at night from river level it is, frankly, beautiful. Three years in construction the bridge was opened by King George V in October 1928. Comprising 7,000 tons of steelwork, it is 193 ft high and 1,275 ft long. Its single arch spans 531ft across the river. Two of the four supporting towers contain elevators linking the bridge to the Quayside below.
