Ryhmäteatteri (the Group Theater) was established in 1971, and its first performances were held on temporary premises in Kallio. The name Ryhmäteatteri was adopted in 1982, when the company moved to its permanent location. At the beginning they toured around Finland, visiting for example schools and prisons, but Ryhmäteatteri is most famous for its summer theater performances in Suomenlinna. The company has also toured in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Performances consist mainly of classic plays dramatised specially by Ryhmäteatteri, as well as modern Finnish drama, stand-up comedy and occasional poetry readings. There is a bar and café with refreshments in the building.
