Swan Lake is one of the most beloved and performed ballets in history. Working as an intense psychological drama, Matthew Bourne’s production has a universal, undying meaning. The choreography, and dancers' emotions portray the torment of searching for love, and the power that encompasses one when love is found. Opening with the young prince (Neil Penlington) wrestling around in his bed terrorized by his dreams, and continuing with his mother's (Saranne Curtin) inability to provide him with the care he needs, the prince staggers out in the night, standing over a lake ready to end his life. This is when the masculine swan (Jose Tirado) makes his presence, and through a string of intimate dancing fulfills the prince’s needs. At this moment the fluttering arms of the swans work perfectly with Peter Tchaikovsky’s famous score. Even when the swans are not on stage, the dancers wear black and white gowns never allowing the audience to forget the image of the swan. The production ends much as it began, with the prince lying in his bed, only now he lies lifeless, and still. Above him the muscular swan holds him and redeems him. - Erin Podlipnik
