Named after Dame Nagio Marsh--a New Zealand novelist and theatrical director of international fame--this intimate theatre is set in the scholarly atmosphere of the University of Canterbury campus. Built in 1967, its primary purpose was as a venue for student productions, and the first performance was Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, directed by Dame Ngaio Marsh herself. However, the theatre is also popular with a number of community and professional performance groups, and each year it hosts numerous dance productions (including the occasional visit from the New Zealand School of Dance), plays, musicals, comedy revues and competitions. Refreshments are available on the premises.
