The High Street is unmistakable, cutting at an obvious angle across the otherwise regular grid of the inner city. Its base forms part of the City Mall, and features the Stewart Fountain, which is lined with hundreds of ceramic tiles created by local children. Some noteworthy architecture can be spotted from the street, including Fishers Building, an unusual example of Venetian Gothic design. As it approaches the Christchurch Polytechnic, High Street boasts excellent stores, art galleries, antique shops, and some of the city's most interesting and bohemian cafes.
