The Swans were involved in the first step of transforming the Victorian Football League (VFL) into the Australian Football League (AFL) back in 1982. It was then that the cash strapped South Melbourne Football Club decided its options lay north of the Victorian border in Australia's biggest city. Although the club languished in the doldrums for several years, the turnaround came in 1996, when Tony Lockett, the gargantuan goal kicker from St Kilda, joined the team.
