Between 1869 and 1889, the Maerchenkoenig (fairy tale king) Ludwig II. built this castles with help from theater painter Christian Jank, and the architects Georg Dollmann and Julius Hoffmann. It is said that Ludwig II. was inspired by one of Richard Wagner's opera performances. This can be seen in the architectural realisation of the glorious Sängersaal (singers' hall) which is a homage to Wagner's Parzival. Cars are not allowed. So if you want to visit the castle you either have to walk or take a carriage up to the castle. If you want to see the castle from its most famous perspective, you also have to walk up to the Marienbrücke.
